Zika

Zika is a virus that is primarily spread through infected mosquitos, but can also be spread through unprotected intercourse with someone infected with Zika.

The Zika virus can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. A Zika infection during pregnancy may lead to microcephaly, or incomplete brain development. Symptoms of Zika infection include a fever with rash, headaches, joint pain, red eyes, or muscle pain.

If you travel to an area with a risk of Zika, you should have protected intercourse, with a condom, or refrain from intercourse for 2 months from time of possible exposure. If a male partner travels to a Zika risk zone, you should have protected intercourse or refrain from intercourse for 3 months from time of possible exposure. There is no vaccine to prevent Zika, so it is best to prevent the spread of the virus. Discuss any recent travel to Zika endemic areas with Dr. Sodhi to determine your risk or level of exposure.
